Chiropractic & Acupuncture FAQs

Just a few common questions about Chiropractic & Acupuncture. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!

  • Can I ride my horse immediately after a treatment?

We generally recommend giving your horse the rest of the day off after a session. Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture can release a lot of tension and toxins from the muscles, which can leave them feeling a little tired or “loose” afterwards. A day of turnout or hand-walking is usually best to let their body integrate the changes before returning to work the next day.

  • How do I know if my horse needs an adjustment?

Horses rarely cry out in pain; they usually show it through performance issues. You might notice they are struggling to pick up a specific canter lead, are rushing jumps, swishing their tail when you ask for a transition, or seem “girthy” and grumpy when being saddled. If your farrier or dentist has ruled out other issues, body pain is often the culprit.

  • Is this safe for all horses?

Yes, it is extremely safe when performed by a trained veterinary professional. Because we are fully qualified vets at Warrnambool Veterinary Clinic - Port Fairy, we have a deep understanding of anatomy and pathology. We will always perform a full lameness exam first to ensure there isn’t a fracture or tendon injury that requires different medical treatment before we adjust them.

  • How many treatments will they need?

This depends on how long the problem has been there. For a sudden strain, one or two visits might fix it. For chronic stiffness in an older schoolmaster, we might recommend a maintenance visit every 3 to 6 months to keep them feeling their best throughout the competition season.
